Egypt has captured the imagination of people around the world as few if any, other places have. Words such as The Nile, pyramids, King Tut, mummies, instantly evoke images of mystery and grandeur in all of our minds.

With 5,000 years of recorded history, the task of investigating this information can be a bit daunting, to say the least. There are many motion pictures and TV movies that prominently feature Egyptology and ancient Egypt, its monuments or sites.

Egyptian movies

The “Ancient Egyptians” miniseries is definitely one of the most enjoyable documentaries of its type. Beyond that, it’s one of the best Egypt-related programs. This is one of the most well researched and pieced together documentary series.

Using actual transcripts of papyri found to piece together it shows the various lives of the people of Ancient Egypt. It ignores the common ideas of studying the culture as a whole and instead chooses to focus on the stories that exist in the records of individual people, their lives, stories, and sometimes sordid affairs.

Movies in general, but horror movies with mummies coming to life in particular, are perhaps the most modern expression of our fascination with the culture and history of Ancient Egypt. Pharaoh’s Curse, Legend of the Mummy, Tale of the Mummy, The Mummy Returns are some examples of ancient Egyptian horror movies.

The Mummy is a fun entertaining movie. Also, there was the remake of this movie. The Mummy (starring Brendon Fraser 1999) is the second remake of the original Universal Studios 1932 movie The Mummy starring Boris Karloff. The first remake of this movie was Hammer Films 1957 version starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.

The Troy is another wonderful movie based on ancient Egypt. The Kingdom of heaven is directed by Ridley Scott. That movie is about the crusades, it shows the character of Sal ah El Dine as an individual of great moral rectitude, and how much honor was filtered to Europe through Islamic traditions.

The Ten Commandments staring Yul Brynner as Ramses (the Pharaoh of Egypt) is another ancient Egyptian movie. The movie was produced in 1959 and it shows great part of what ancient Egypt looked like based on studies. The movie is very much as the history of the bible or part of it.

Princess of the Nile is another great movie on ancient Egypt. Shalimar, an Egyptian princess, striving to rid her country of its Bedouin conquerors, forms an alliance with Prince Haidi, son of the Caliph of Bagdad. She practices her intrigues both at the court and, disguised as a dancing girl, in the market place.
